 Federal Specification CCC-W-408 -- Vinyl Wall Covering

Federal Specification CCC-W-408 was issued May 8, 1963, and provides for vinyl coated wall coverings standard requirements.  Federal Specifications where developed for governmental procurement purposes
and may or may not be in-print or enforceable. 

Note: Vinyl Wall Coverings on exterior walls can create a moisture barrier or vapor sandwich, resulting in mold formation.

 
   Three Types and Two Classes of Vinyl Wall Covering:nyl Wall Covering:
Type 1 Light
Duty
7 oz. per sq. yard

For use as a maintenance-free covering for areas not subjected to abrasion or wear traffic, and for ceilings.

Type 2 Medium Duty 13 oz. per sq. yard

For general use in area where there is average traffic and scuffing.

Type 3 Heavy
Duty
22 oz. per sq. yard

For use only as wainscoting or lower wall protection for areas exposed to damage by moveable equipment or to abusive conditions, such as exist in hospitals.

Mildew-Resistant Finish

Composition may be of three layers, the first being a supporting material of cotton cloth, non-woven fiberglass, asbestos or other suitable material.   Supporting materials for Class 2 must be mildew resistant treated.  The second layer is a coating compound of of elasticized, or copolymerized vinyl chloride resin which is applied to the outside of the supporting material is a continuous film.  This layer is integrally pigmented.  A clear coating may be added as a third layer if it is necessary in order to meet the physical requirements noted in the specification

Note: All pieces to be in 3-yard length or multiples thereof.   The specification also includes requirements and test procedures as to breaking strength, tear strength, hydrostatic resistance, abrasion resistance, char length, color-fastness to light, shrinkage, cold crack, blocking, heat aging, and cracking.   Manufacturers should be able to supply all the information concerning specification requirements and test data upon request.
