Wall Preparation Tips:

Walls (plaster or drywall) should be sized before hanging wallpaper, and walls should be free of dirt and grease before sizing is applied.

New wallpaper may be applied over existing wallpaper, as long as the previously installed wallpaper has a good adhesion to the surface of the wallboard.

The removal of existing wallpaper, before applying new wallpaper is recommended and can be a time consuming process. One should allow one-hour of labor per 100 to 150 SF for a single layer of wallpaper removal, and one-hour per 50-100 SF for the removal multi-layered wallpaper.

Additional labor hours for wallpaper and paint can be found at: www.p1m.com/labor-paint.htm

There are two basic methods for removing old wallpaper; soaking and scrapping or steaming:

Soaking and scraping may require the scoring (score) of the wallpaper surface with a PaperTiger® to allow the wallpaper stripper liquid to reach the glue.  The recommended product for soaking is called DIF® which is an enzyme, and should be applied using a pump sprayer.  Scrapers needed to help remove the soaked wallpaper would be good quality putty knife and possibly a 4" sharp blade scrapper. (a mixture of water and a few table spoons of vinegar in a spray-bottle can be used in lieu of DIF® --- although, DIF® does function better than water and vinegar)

Stubborn wallpaper and multi-layered wallpaper may require the use of a steamer to left the older layers, with the aid of good a quality putty knife and a 4" sharp blade scrapper.

(In some instances, heavy duty vinyl wallpaper can be pulled off without soaking and scrapping, and care should be taken so not to damage the wall subsurface beneath the wallpaper)
