Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., performs the classification and evaluation of the properties of a product, as used in construction and manufacturing

ultrasonic cleaning
The process of cleaning an object using sound waves, water and detergents to agitate soils.

ULV Fogger
Ultra Low Volume, an electrical/mechanical device used to distribute and regulate the disbursement of disinfectants and fragrances.

UV Light
Ultraviolet light, wavelengths of visible light, used to detect urine deposits in carpet, etc.

underlayment
Wood panels as used under a finished floor to provide a smooth finish.

unit price
The costs of labor, materials, all applicable taxes and all associated sundry to perform a task or discipline.

unsalvageable
Zero value, rubbish, not always reusable.

unsanitary water
Non-potable water, gray water, category #2 water.

vacuum freeze-drying
The process of drying books, documents, etc., within a negative pressured chamber.

vacuum pressure
Negative pressure as related to the lift and airflow of an extraction unit.

vapor barrier
A water-resistant material as used to prevent the passage of moisture and vapors.

vapor pressure
Pressure as exerted from a vapor that is in equilibrium state with a liquid or solid.

VAT
Vinyl asbestos tile, contains asbestos fibers; hazardous.

VCT
Vinyl composition tile, a glass fiber-flooring tile.

veneer
A thin layer of material; wood, plastic, metal, etc. as glued to a substrate material for strength and/ or decorative features.

vinyl
Thermoplastics, constructed from vinyl chlorides through polymerization.

vinyl chloride monomer
CHCICH2, used in the manufacturing of PVC's and found to be carcinogenic

viscosity
The property of a fluid that resist force causing fluids to flow.

visqueen
Polyethylene as used as a vapor barrier.

visual inspection
The inspection of a loss site without the use of instruments.

VOC
Volatile Organic Compound, any organic matter that is capable of liquefying into a gases matter.

VOC Test Tubes
Gas vapor detector tubes used in detecting gas vapors.

volt
The measure of electrical potential.

vulcanization
A chemical process where rubber compounds lose their plasticity and is irreversible.

wall covering
Any material used on a wall surface as a finish.

warping
The change of a surface; wall, floor, ceiling, etc. from its original shape due to water, moisture or heat.

waste water
Spent water from a residential, commercial, industrial facility.

water mark
A stain on any material caused by water.

water analysis
The testing and analyzing of a waters content for bacteria and chemicals.

water migration
The action of water to move in and out of a materials capillaries.

weak acid
An acid that is not fully associated in aqueous solutions.

weathering
The actions of the weather to change the texture, color, strength and composition of a material and its finish.

weep hole
A small hole as designed within a system or a post-penetration in a system to drain or relieve water.

wet bulb temperature
The temperature reading using a thermometer having a moist sock covering, the temperature where secondary damages will occur.

wicking
The evaporation of moisture or liquid from porous materials, as induced through equilibrium or as forced using air movers.

winterize
The process of protecting a building from freezing when the primary heat source is not in commission.

work authorization
A document as signed by both parties directing the contractor to perform its work, which also includes payment terms.

work order
A written directive to a contractor, subcontractor or employee authorizing the work to proceed with a start and completion date.

wrinkling
The distortion or rippling of a surface.
